By BBN Staff: Belize City resident Darren Gillett, 35, was given a 5 year prison sentence after pleading guilty to burglary, escaping police custody, and damage to government property over a 2-day span in May.
Gillett appeared before Senior Magistrate Tricia Anderson-Pitts and plead guilty to all 3 charges against him.
He was charged for stealing a cellphone and $50 in coins from a home on Antelope Street Extension on Sunday, May 15. He was arrested later that day and the next day while in custody at the Queen Street Police Station he removed a metal vent and escaped. He spent 5 days on the run before being recaptured and eventually charged.
After pleading guilty to all charges he was handed down a 5-year sentence for burglary, a year for escaping and a $1,000 fine for damage to property plus $5 cost of court, which must be paid by September 1, 2022.
