By Benjamin Flowers: The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins in eight days, and the list of storm names for this year is officially out.
The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued the official list of English names for storms this season along with a seasonal outlook which predicts a 65 percent chance of the season being above average.
The English storm names for this season include: Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Daniel, Earl, Fiona, Gaston, Hermin, Ian, Julia, Karl Lisa, Martin, Nicole, Owen, Paula, Richard, Shary, Tobias, Virginie, and Walter.
Notably, there was a Hurricane Earl that hit the region in 2010, and a hurricane Earl that hit Belize as a Category 1 in 2016.
The season begins on June 1 and weather systems receive a name once they reach tropical storm status which is a rotating wind pattern with winds at 39 miles per hour (63 kilometers per hour). The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane season had 21 named storms. It was the sixth year in a row that the hurricane season was above average and the third year that all 21 names designated ahead of time were used.
