19 children, 2 teachers killed in Texas massacre

Posted: Wednesday, May 25, 2022. 8:16 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzales: U.S. authorities have confirmed that 19 children and 2 teachers were shot and killed yesterday in the second deadliest school shooting on record in the U.S.

The gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos reportedly barricaded himself in a 4th-grade classroom.

Authorities surrounded Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and broke windows to evacuate children and staff.

During an exchange of gunfire, police officers killed Ramos.

Investigators say that Ramos began his rampage by shooting his grandmother, crashing his car, and then entering the school carrying a rifle.

U.S. President, Joe Biden issued a statement extending condolences to the families and community and calling for stricter gun safety laws.

“As a nation, we have to ask when in God’s name we’re going to stand up to the gun lobby when in God’s name we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done,” Biden said.

This morning, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams issued a statement expressing solidarity with the parents and the Texas community.

“It is a sad moment when we have to hear of children being killed while learning and preparing themselves for life. These mass shootings at schools are sickening and something needs to be done to stop it and keep our children safe at school,” Williams stated.
