By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize handed over the presidency of the Central American Isthmus’ Council for Sports and Recreation (CODICADER) to Guatemala on Wednesday at the 30th meeting of Directors of CODICADER being held to reactivate the region’s school competitions.

Belize Minister of Sport Rodwell Ferguson handed over the presidency to the president of Guatemala’s Physical Education Council (Digefgt) Francisco Rafaél Itzván Reyna.

“It’s a historic moment for Belize to pass over the presidency of CODICADER to Guatemala,” said Minister Ferguson at the handing over on Wednesday evening in Antigua Guatemala.

“While we have our differences, we maintain our relationship in trade and cooperation. So, I think CODICADER has been the best thing for the region bringing all countries in Central America together, promoting all disciplines of sports for our young people. While we held the presidency for two years because of COVID, we are now happy to pass over to Guatemala.”

Reyna said it was an honour to receive the CODICADER presidency from Belize for the period 2022-2023. He said Guatemala was committed to doing a good job at the helm of CODICADER, promising, through the consensus of its members, to make the best decisions to strengthen school sports in the region.

Ferguson is accompanied by Julio Llinas, Belize’s CODICADER Representative, and Marvin Ottley, Deputy Director of the National Sports Council of Belize, at the CODICADER meeting which started on Wednesday and closes on Friday, May 26.

“CODICADER is the Central American Council for Sports and Recreation with a mandate to strengthen the ties of friendship and sports in the Central American Region and contribute to the integration and solidarity of peace among member countries,” said Ferguson in a social media post promising to continue using “this platform to advocate and bring life to all sport disciplines in Belize”.

“Fruitful discussions were held and resolutions were passed in pro of CODICADER and the population we serve,” said Ferguson.

The regional school games have not been held since 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but CODICADER is looking to reactivate them.

Representatives from all the Central American countries are attending the CODICADER meeting.
