By Aaron Humes: After running into the long arm of the law a few weeks ago, residents of Placencia in Stann Creek District will get a chance with Government support to address the issue of erosion on Silk Caye.
According to Minister of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation Andre Perez, a meeting with affected communities in the south led to the formation of a task force. It will include community leaders, technical advisors from the Ministries of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, Natural Resources, Petroleum and Mining, and Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, and the Belize Coast Guard.
Based on the findings of the assessment, the Fisheries Department will be giving approval for the community to proceed with the work started to address the erosion with the support of the technical experts.
South Silk Caye is the only one of the original Silk Cayes remaining after years of erosion claimed the others.
