By BBN Staff: When Gregory Wellington Johnson showed up to court today, charged with common assault and insulting words against his common-law wife, he was certain that she would be in court to drop the charges, but she was a no show.
The 37-year-old Belize City resident claimed that his common-law wife had gone to the police station four times to withdraw the charge after he allegedly punched her in the head during a domestic dispute, but police would not allow her to do so.
He told the court that she was outside waiting to request no further action, but when her name was called, she was not there. Johnson’s arraignment proceeded, and he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Bail was granted to Wellington in the sum of $800 plus one surety of the same amount.
He is scheduled to return to court on July 20.
