By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center have informed that beginning Saturday, June 4, 2022, every first Saturday in June will be recognized as a day of celebration in honor of Sharon Matola, the founder and visionary behind “the best little zoo in the world.”
A statement from the zoo noted that this was declared to coincide with Sharon’s birthday on June 3rd.
On Sharon Matola Day, all Belizeans will enter the Zoo for free.
In lieu of admission fees, visitors are encouraged to take along fresh fruit, veggies, and meat. This will be done to pay homage to Sharon’s strategy of garnering in-kind support to feed and care for the animals in the early days of the Belize Zoo.
In addition, each family visiting the Zoo on June 4th will receive a copy of the “Adventures of Hoodwink the Owl” children’s book.
“Come and join us and meet your Belize Zoo Team as we celebrate Sharon’s legacy and contributions to wildlife conservation in Belize,” the statement from the zoo said.
See you on June 4 at the best little zoo in the world.
