By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Agriculture and Trade Show Organizing Committee selected Darwin Orellana from Maskall in the Belize District as the 2022 Junior Farmer of the Year.
Orellana along with the Men’s Farmer of the Year Orlando Ek and Woman Farmer Norma Figueroa is being recognized at the National Agriculture and Trade Show this weekend.
Nineteen-year-old Orellana attended Nazarene High School from first form to third form.
“Since leaving high school, he has passionately engaged in capacity building in agriculture which has assisted him in increasing his knowledge of plants and animals on a daily basis,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
Orellana had a good example in his father, who according to MAFSE, “is a well-established farmer who has been cultivating vegetables and rearing livestock for the past ten years”.
According to MAFSE, Orellana started his own farm and is now a member of the Bomba Cooperative.
“He cultivates onions, tomatoes, cantaloupes, watermelons, and sweet peppers. Simultaneously, he also does cattle rearing as well as the processing of tomato sauce, tomato jam, and jalapeños,” said MAFSE.
“Darwin is dedicated to farming and his future plans include continuing to plant, but his main aim is to become more established in the cattle industry.”
This year’s Agric and Trade Show is being held under the theme “Innovations in Technology: Driving a Climate Resilient and Competitive Agriculture and Food Sector”.
