By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Agriculture and Trade Show Organizing Committee selected Norma Estella Figueroa from the village of La Gracia in the Cayo District as the 2022 Woman Farmer of the Year.
Figueroa along with the Men’s Farmer of the Year Orlando Ek and Junior Farmer Darwin Orellana will be recognized at the National Agriculture and Trade Show this weekend.
Born and raised in San Ignacio, Figueroa started farming at the age of 20 developing her farm, which she calls ‘Finca la Bendicion’.
Now 44, Figueroa is a registered farmer.
“Mrs. Figueroa has proven herself to be very passionate, enthusiastic, energetic, and hard-working, with the capacity of managing her own farmland to achieve her goals,” said the NATS Committee.
“She is a self-sufficient farmer who has achieved a sustainable source of livelihood that has provided for her children’s education and basic needs for her household. Over the past few years, Mrs. Figueroa has successfully transitioned her farm from a traditional agri-production unit to a sustainable farming system and now grows several varieties of vegetables and fruits which she sells at the San Ignacio and Belmopan Markets,” said the NATS Committee.
