Orlando Ek from Concepcion, Corozal is 2022 Farmer of the Year

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Agriculture and Trade Show Organizing Committee selected Orlando Ek from the village of Concepcion in the Corozal District as the 2022 Farmer of the Year.

Ek along with the Junior Farmer Darwin Orellana and Woman Farmer Norma Figueroa will be recognized at the National Agriculture and Trade Show this weekend.

Orlando Ek is the chairman of the Concepcion Vegetable Farmers’ Co-operative Society Ltd.

“He has had a passion for farming since his early childhood … he has devoted 15 years of his life to agriculture,” said the NATS Committee.

“One of Mr. Ek’s accomplishments has been the formation of a group of farmers within the village into a cooperative, the Concepcion Vegetable Farmers’ Co-operative Society,” said the NATS Committee.

“His aim for the group is to produce fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables for consumers as well for the group to diversify in planting various crops and become resilient to climate change.”

“Mr. Ek spent his early childhood and teenage years helping his dad in the cane fields to help with the family income; he was able to continue his studies after high school, attending Corozal Junior College and earning an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. After completing junior college Mr. Ek struggled to find a job so he continued practicing agriculture.”

Accordingly to the NATS Committee, during his early years in agriculture, Ek worked along with his brother-in-law, who taught him all about agriculture.

His wife Guadalupe Ek and his family assist with the fieldwork.

This year’s Agric and Trade Show is being held under the theme “Innovations in Technology: Driving a Climate Resilient and Competitive Agriculture and Food Sector”.
