U.S. Embassy Belmopan Chargé d’Affaires says that the world has condemned Russia for invading Ukraine

Posted: Friday, May 27, 2022. 1:23 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: It has been three months since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, and U.S. Embassy Belmopan Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Leyla Moses-Ones told our newsroom this week that the majority of the world is condemning Russia’s actions.

The latest update on the situation shows Russian military forces capturing villages in eastern Donbas as they attempt to surround Severodonetsk, a city in the Luhansk Oblast.

Speaking to Breaking Belize News this week, Chargé Moses-Ones said, “This is a historic moment as there is a global consensus that the conduct of the Russian state is intolerable. Those responsible for inflicting brutality and violence, and blatantly violating the principles that undergird international peace and security, must not go unpunished. Our message for Russia’s military and political leadership, as well as the rank and file who commit war crimes or other atrocities, has been consistent: the world is watching, and you will be held accountable.”

She also noted that the United States is by far the largest supporter of Ukraine and that through the generosity of the American people and the leadership of President Joe Biden, the US has delivered support to the Ukrainian government and people and continues to do so.

“We have made it clear that the United States will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Chargé Moses-Ones added.

While in most cases, updates on the Ukrainian war are obtained through international media, the United States Government recently afforded an opportunity for journalists from across Central America, to speak with Professor Volodymyr Dubovyk, who is currently in Ukraine and experiencing the war as happens in real-time.

The teleconference, coordinated through the US Embassies in Belize and Guatemala, allowed regional reporters to get first-hand knowledge of the issues being faced as Russia continues its assault on not just the Ukrainian military, but civilians as well.

Speaking on the public sentiment in Ukraine, Professor Dubovyk stressed that there is great sadness in the country due to the shock of everyday life, the displacement of families, and the murder of civilians which is compounded because Ukrainians feel strongly that they have done nothing to provoke Russia’s assault on their homes and on their lives. The displacement, which has seen over 4 million people flee the country as refugees along with millions of others internally displaced, is also causing additional economic damage to the country.

“At least one-third of the population of the country has fled west…,” he said, “that will be a problem obviously because people are leaving their jobs behind, factories are shut down the businesses are not running, they are not getting any profits, they are not paying any taxes, they cannot support their families….,” Professor Dubovyk added.

He also said that the war has not played out with swift, decisive victories for Russia the way President Vladimir Putin had hoped, because he overestimated the abilities of his own troops while underestimating the resiliency of the Ukrainian military and the resolve of the Western World to assist Ukraine.

“But Russia still has an upper edge, they still have a bigger number of troops, even though they have experienced heavy casualties in this invasion. But [apart from] personnel they also have tanks, armored carriers, planes, and missiles. Russian missiles can reach any single corner of Ukraine in a matter of minutes, so that’s a problem,” Professor Dubovyk said.

CNBC reported today that the Biden administration is considering sending long-range weapons to Ukraine to assist in the fight, which will add to billions of dollars the US has already given in support to Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion.
