Woman kills gunman; prevents mass shooting in West Virginia, USA

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday evening, a woman shot and killed Dennis Butler, 37, after he opened fire at a group of about 40 people attending a birthday party in West Virginia, the BBC reports. 

Authorities told the media that the woman’s quick reaction saved many lives and prevented a mass shooting. 

It comes amid debate in the United States of America on gun control laws after Tuesday’s devastating shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas that left 19 students and 2 teachers dead. 

Butler reportedly arrived at the party with an AR-15 rifle and opened fire from his vehicle. That was when the woman who has no law enforcement background fired back at him.

“She’s just a member of the community who was carrying her weapon lawfully. And instead of running from the threat she engaged with the threat and saved several lives,” a police spokesman said. 

Authorities say that the woman is cooperating with investigators and charges will not be filed against her.

Authorities are investigating how Butler obtained the weapon since he was a convicted felon with an extensive criminal record.
