Government takes a look at garbage

By Aaron Humes: An Inter-Ministerial Committee has reported back to the wider Cabinet on the issues of garbage disposal and recommendations on sustainable practices to promote a clean environment, climate protection and zero waste for the health, aesthetics and well-being of the country.

Cabinet took note of the report, which recommendations included a review of the current environmental protection regulations.

There are expected amendments to the Returnable Containers Act, strengthening the institutional capacity of the Department of the Environment, new actions on plastic and waste disposal and an awareness campaign on cleaner communities and recycling.

Belize has already banned the use of Styrofoam and single-use plastics, encouraging everyone to convert to more biodegradable containers.
