Posted: Sunday, May 29, 2022. 1:16 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Saturday, health officials in Mexico confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the country.

Officials say that the patient was a 50-year-old resident of New York who was being treated in Mexico City.

At this time, officials believe that the patient had been infected in the Netherlands. The patient was isolated and in stable condition.

About 20 countries have reported outbreaks of the viral disease, with over 200 confirmed infections mostly in Europe.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that monkeypox is a rare disease that is caused by the monkeypox virus. The disease was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name ‘monkeypox.’

The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox.

The CDC says that it is closely monitoring cases of monkeypox reported in several countries.
