Hurricane Agatha makes landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane; heavy rains are forecast for Belize

Posted: Monday, May 30, 2022. 5:43 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: This afternoon, Hurricane Agatha, the first hurricane of the eastern Pacific season, made landfall in Southern Mexico as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 miles per hour.

Hurricane Agatha continues to produce strong winds, dangerous storm surges, and flooding rains as it moves inland.  On the forecast track, Agatha will continue to move inland over Oaxaca through early Tuesday.

The National Hurricane Center says that Agatha is expected to weaken after making landfall.

In addition, forecasters are closely monitoring for any development near the Yucatan Peninsula since the remnants of Agatha could contribute to the development of a tropical system.

However, regardless of development, heavy rains are forecasted across southern Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, and Belize throughout the week.
