By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, aims at vaccinating 73,000 school children aged 5 to 11 countrywide against COVID-19. The great majority will be vaccinated at the country’s primary schools, but vaccines will also be available at vaccinating sites.

That 5-11 COVID-19 vaccination campaign in schools got underway this morning.

“This morning our COVID-19 vaccination exercise for children 5 – 11 yrs started at primary schools countrywide,” said the Ministry of Health.

“We encourage parents to be informed and get your child vaccinated from COVID19 as soon as you are able to.”

For the children to be vaccinated their parents must sign a consent form that is being provided by the schools.

“Signed consent forms should be handed in before children are vaccinated. Please communicate directly with your child’s school on the schedule for vaccinations,” said the MOHW.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness post on Monday was accompanied by a photo (which accompanies this story as well), of a “proud parent with [her] child receiving the vaccine this morning at Corozal Mary Hill R.C. School, Corozal Town.”

“The Ministry of Health & Wellness is pleased to announce that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for children, ages five to 11, have arrived in Belize,” said a press release by the Government of Belize Press Office on Saturday.

The Ministry of Health said that children who are vaccinated have a lower risk for infections, severe illness, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19.

They also have a lower chance of getting sick and spreading the virus to their homes and other children in school said the MOHW

“Protecting children is the collective responsibility of parents, the community and the government,” said the release by the GOB Press Office
