By Aaron Humes: The major political parties continue to trade blows in village council elections, with the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) narrowing the gap this week.
The PUP officially claimed seven of 14 villages that conducted elections on May 29, including Sarteneja, Chunox, and Copper Bank in the Corozal Southeast division according to area representative Florencio Marin, Jr., along with uncontested Progresso.
The UDP claimed six villages, including Xaibe and Patchakan in Corozal North according to party deputy leader and area representative Hugo Patt. According to the PUP, one other slate was independent.
From the nominations held this week for next week’s elections on June 5, the PUP has already banked La Gracia and San Marcos in the Cayo District, Willows Bank, Freetown Sibun in the Belize District, and San Pablo in the Toledo District. A further seventeen villages will go to elections while another 15 will nominate candidates for elections on June 12.
