San Pedro tourism awards name best on Ambergris Caye

By Aaron Humes: In a destination very much spoiled for choice, naming the best in terms of tourism on Ambergris Caye can be a tall order.

But the San Pedro Town Council’s first-ever Tourism Awards for the island took a stab at it on Saturday night.

According to Ambergris Today, winners from among 15 nominees within five categories were selected by a panel of judges picked by the Council committee. On Saturday, the winners were announced at a ceremony at the R. Angel Nuñez Auditorium with live music, food, and entertainment.

The Hotel of the Year is Coco Beach Resort, with Small Accommodation of the Year going to PUR Boutique Cabanas.

Restaurant of the Year is El Fogon, whose manager Olive Eiley Dominguez was enthused: “We are so honoured! Thank you San Pedro Town Council…A big part of this recognition couldn’t be done with our excellent staff and team and of course, our family, friends and patrons who have supported us all these years. Thank You!”

Tour Operator of the Year is Searious Adventures, known for trips to the Blue Hole and Shark Ray Alley among others, and Tour Guide of the Year is Turiano Vasquez, whose son accepted the honour on his behalf.

The People’s Choice Award winner is Joshua Reimer from PUR Boutique Cabanas.

The contest judges were Melanie Paz (BTIA), Billy Leslie (Tour Operator Association), Alina Zaldivar (Hotel Association), Tania Ayala, Marcus Alamina, Jorge Cante, and Nubia Carillo (BTB).
