Forecasters: Hurricane Agatha could redevelop in the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean

Posted: Tuesday, May 31, 2022. 7:11 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, Hurricane Agatha made landfall in Southern Mexico as a Category 2 Hurricane with heavy rainfall spreading inland across Mexico.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1. Forecasters say that the remnants of Agatha could contribute to the development of a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean over the next 5 days.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) notes that a large and complex area of low pressure related to the remnants of Agatha is expected to develop, this system could become a tropical depression while it moves over the northwestern Caribbean Sea. If the system develops into a Tropical Storm, it would be given the name Alex.

Regardless of development, heavy rainfall is forecast for southeastern Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, and Belize over the next few days.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize has issued a flood watch for the possibility of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
