Mexican officials work to clear highways blocked by mudslides as storm Agatha weakens on southern coast

Posted: Tuesday, May 31, 2022. 9:16 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday afternoon, Hurricane Agatha made landfall in Southern Mexico as a Category 2 Hurricane causing torrential rains and heavy winds.

Mexican officials are now working to clear highways that had been blocked by mudslides.

Agatha made landfall near Puerto Angel on the Pacific coast before losing strength as it moved inland.

Agatha is expected to dissipate by this afternoon but heavy rains pose threats of life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in Oaxaca.

Authorities confirmed that mudslides blocked 2 highways in Oaxaca with some towns losing power and phone lines being knocked down.

Agatha is on record as the strongest hurricane to make landfall on Mexico’s Pacific Coast in the month of May.
