By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Health authorities in the United Kingdom are urging anyone who has tested positive for monkeypox to abstain from sex until their symptoms have cleared.
The United Kingdom (U.K.) health security agency recommended that those infected continue to use condoms for 8 weeks after the virus has passed.
Britain recorded a total of 179 cases of the virus in May.
The U.K. now has the highest monkeypox cases among non-endemic countries.
Symptoms of the infectious disease include rashes, fever, headaches, muscle ache, swelling, and back pain.
Health experts say that it usually clears up on its own within 2 to 4 weeks.
However, the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that the majority of cases have been spread through sex and a particular concentration of cases occur within the gay and bisexual communities.
WHO said that it is unclear as to whether this outbreak could lead to a global pandemic but it is considering whether it should be assessed as a “potential public health emergency of international concern.”
