By BBN Staff: On Monday, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St Vincent and the Grenadines said that United States President Joe Biden has no right in deciding which countries are invited to the Summit of the Americas in June.
The summit is scheduled for June 6 to 10, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.
PM Gonsalves says that there was an agreement that the summit must be inclusive.
“That’s not his right to exclude anyone – that’s to be done in the whole of the Americas – he alone can’t make that decision,” Gonsalves said.
Gonsalves further noted that some countries in the region will attend while others are not going to attend at all.
At this time, Caribbean leaders are considering whether or not they will boycott the summit if the US goes ahead with its plan to not invite the leaders of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua to the event.
CARICOM chair and Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceno said that Washington is lobbying for Caricom to change its position and not boycott the summit that the United States said it expected to focus on “Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future” for the hemisphere, The New York Carib News reports.
