By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last week, team members of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute rescued a female manatee calf in Belize.
The Institute shared via their Facebook page that the manatee was observed alone for an extended period of time and was having difficulty breathing and navigating rough waters.
The 1-2 week old manatee was found alone struggling in rough waters.
Young manatees can become separated from their mothers during stormy weather, as they may not be strong enough to fight strong currents in the water.
Wildtracks, a non-profit organization in Belize is now providing around-the-clock care for the calf.
“We are counting her breaths, monitoring her behavior, and crossing our fingers that she makes it…24 hours a day until she stabilizes. A huge thank you to all the Wildtracks Team members, who have been up in shifts all night for the last two nights to provide the dedicated care she needs,” Wildtracks noted on their Facebook page.
