By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: May 31 was commemorated as World Parrot Day. The day was set aside by the World Parrot Trust (WPT) in 2004 as a way to let everyone know that these remarkable birds need protection in the wild.
According to the WPT, almost 1 in every 3 species is threatened in the wild due to habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade.
Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) noted that Belize has 9 types of parrots with the scarlet macaw being the largest and most colorful.
With approximately 350 individual macaws left in Belize, FCD spends 7 months every year protecting these parrots.
FCD encourages all Belizeans to join in protecting these parrots.
