Governor-General selected to replace Leader of the Opposition as Julian Cho High School guest speaker

By Aaron Humes: Latest information to Breaking Belize News (BBN) from our colleagues at PGTV is that native Toledoan and Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam will replace Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow as guest speaker for the graduation ceremony at Julian Cho Technical High School.

A second vote was held after the students’ choice of Barrow was apparently denied by the school’s board for unstated reasons, although some students have said publicly that the choice was not unanimous and the list of potential speakers, including some with ties to the School, was not particularly inspiring.

Dame Froyla was appointed Governor General last year, replacing Sir Colville Young, and was elevated to Dame during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in March. She has been an educator, anthropologist, and former executive director of Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management, a fighter for the cause of Maya communal rights and recognition. It has not been indicated whether she has accepted the invitation.
