By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  Today, the Government of the United States of America announced that it is allocating $2.1 billion in funding to strengthen the country’s food supply system which has been affected drastically by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to a US Department of Agriculture official, the new funding will bolster food supply chains, including initiatives to expand small- and mid-sized processing plants.

The official further stated that the funds will also be used to finance new infrastructure such as cold storage facilities and to assist farmers shifting to organic production.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack noted that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had led to higher prices for agricultural inputs and food products. As such, he plans to focus on the importance of moving U.S. food supplies away from dominance by a few highly concentrated businesses.

Vilsack believes that a transformed food system is part of how the USA as a country will become more resilient.

Around the world, leaders are concerned about inflation with near-record food prices being reported. Farmers and consumers are also seeking new ways to cut costs and save money.
