By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) inaugurated the Teakettle Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Facilitation Center in Teakettle on Tuesday, said the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations.

The ATM Facilitation Center is located at Mile 55 on the George Price Highway near the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave entrance in Teakettle Village.

The Ministry of Tourism said the ATM Facilitation Center project is “the result of efforts between the Belize Tourism Board and the Cayo South Office to improve the tourism infrastructure in proximity to the popular archaeological site”.

“The inauguration of the ATM Facilitation Center marks the beginning of tourism growth and development within the village,” said BTB in a press release.

“The ATM Facilitation Centre will serve as a media centre, gift shop, and resting area, for the thousands of international and local visitors that visit the nearby Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Archaeological Reserve on an annual basis.”

In delivering the main address at the opening, Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler stressed the importance of infrastructure development to the tourism product.

“Belize has it all (barrier reef, archaeological sites, cultural diversity, and more), but what is needed is infrastructure and the sharing of knowledge by our people with visitors coming into the country,” said Minister Mahler.

In the welcome, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing and Area Representative for Cayo South Julius Espat also spoke of the need for the development of the Teakettle and promised that local artisans and tourism stakeholders will receive the assistance needed.

The Ministry of Tourism said that joining Ministers Mahlers and Espat at the ribbon-cutting ceremony were Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing Victor Espat, BTB board member Carlos Santos and residents of Teakettle.

The Ministry also said, “the community members welcomed the Teakettle ATM Facilitation Center and look forward to the economic opportunities that will be created as a result of its establishment”.
