By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Cabinet has agreed that the price of a 16-ounce bread will continue to be controlled in the country.
In April, flour suppliers requested from the Controller of Supplies in the Supplies Control Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture to increase the price of flour due to high inflation, the effects of COVID-19 on the supply chain, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which has caused difficulties with the production of wheat worldwide. And after the news of that request went viral on social media, several grocers countrywide increased the prices for bread illegally; to which, the Government noted that the price increase was unsanctioned and illegal as the price of bread is regulated.
In late April, Cabinet said that there would be no increase in the controlled price of bread.
This week, Cabinet noted that it considered the rising cost of wheat and the overall increase in the cost of production of bread thus looking at various measures designed to keep the cost of bread to consumers as low as possible while ensuring that bakers get a fair return on production.
Meanwhile, around the world, the cost of wheat is soaring which is also impacting the price of bread and pasta.
