By Aaron Humes: This week’s Cabinet meeting covered the usual multiplicity of topics.

At Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, the Belizean Nationality Act, Chapter 161, will be amended by new legislation for a legal regime to implement Amnesty 2022 starting in July.

Tens of thousands of undocumented individuals may apply and qualify for permanent residency in various categories and would earn citizenship after five years.

A new National Investment Policy and Strategy was approved to encourage and facilitate private investment in Belize in support of continuous stimulation of economic growth.

A three-year strategy and official policy on child labour have been adopted, setting as its goal the elimination of the worst forms of the practice by 2025 and its gradual reduction. This new policy was drafted with broad consultation and in collaboration with UNICEF, the International Labour Organization, and other relevant national stakeholders.

In transport, Cabinet gave its approval for amendments to the statutory instrument regarding water taxi regulations to introduce provisions to improve the safety and efficiency of the water taxi industry.

Finally, Cabinet gave its full support for a Summer Internship Program to be managed through the Ministry of the Public Service for 130 students from fourth form and junior colleges. The internship program, which will place students in various government ministries, will be divided into two cohorts lasting for one month in July and August.
