Premier League of Belize to kick off on July 23

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) will kick off its Opening Championship with nine teams on Saturday, July 23, 2022.

The nine clubs will play a double round-robin with playoffs afterward to determine the champion. That champion will represent Belize in the 2023 Central American tournament which qualifies six teams for the new and expanded Concacaf Champions League which Concacaf announced on June 1.

The decision was made at the seventh Ordinary Congress at the Roaring River Golf Course Conference Room in the Cayo District.

The Premier League of Belize had been inactive after election problems landed the PLB in court, but matters were settled earlier in the year and the PLB assisted the Football Federation of Belize in organizing and running the FFB Top League Closing Season won by Verdes.

Nine teams attended today’s congress, namely Bandits Sports, Placencia Assassins, Verdes FC, San Pedro Pirates, Altitude FC, Wagiya FC, Freedom Fighters, Police FC, and Belize Defence Force FC.

Ian Haylock was returned as president in the Executive Committee elections held during the Ordinary Congress. The following people were elected along with Haylock: Vice President Godfrey Arzu, Women’s member Karol Claros Maldonado, and members Lorin Frazer and Jordan Zabaneh.
