Sports Council messenger shot on Northside

By Aaron Humes: Initial information from police is that one Michael Meighan, a messenger for the office of the National Sports Council (NSC) this morning, was hit by a gunshot after being cornered near St. Thomas Street this morning.

Meighan told police that he was on a motorcycle on Princess Margaret Drive turning into St. Thomas Street near the back gate of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) when two men also on the motorcycle stopped him at the roundabout.

The passenger on the motorcycle, described as a clear-skinned man wearing an orange-colored shirt and black Dickies pants jumped off the rear of the motorcycle, pulled out what appeared to be a 9-millimeter pistol and opened fire in his direction.

Meighan said he jumped off his own motorcycle and ran toward the security guard’s gate, but he could not avoid being shot.

Meighan has been treated and discharged from the hospital and police investigations continue.
