By Aaron Humes: The Government has announced that Belize has officially delivered its counter-memorial to the Registrar of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, concerning its case over the unfounded claim of Guatemala to the majority of Belizean territory.
Prime Minister John Briceno made the announcement in the House of Representatives this morning, stating that it is an official answer to Guatemala’s opening memorial on December 8, 2020, and according to the Government “makes a robust defence of Belize’s sovereignty over its entire territory including islands and the pertaining maritime areas in accordance with international law.”
Guatemala must have its counter-memorial in reply ready by December, followed by Belize’s rejoinder at this time next year. Then there will be oral hearings on the case to be set by the court, expected by around 2024.
Belize continues its research in order to be ready for any response by Guatemala, which most international experts agree does not have a case, or has a weak one at best.
