House to consider new Companies Bill, introduce new structure for judiciary and divorce

By Aaron Humes: Today’s meeting of the House of Representatives in Belmopan will debate the new Companies Bill, which proposes to repeal, replace and consolidate the International Business Companies Act, Chapter 270 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2020, and the Companies Act, Chapter 250 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2020; and further establish and facilitate a modernized framework for the registration, operation, and regulation of companies.

The motion for $12 million in loans from the World Bank for further COVID-19 response will also be debated.

After being deferred from the last meeting, the Senior Courts Bill and related Constitutional amendment is expected to be introduced, which will consolidate the Supreme Court of Judicature and Court of Appeal into a single system headed by a Chief Justice superior to the President of the Court of Appeal.

An amendment to the Nationality Act will lay the groundwork for the forthcoming amnesty of undocumented residents, while an amendment to the Married Persons (Protection) (Amendment) Bill, 2022 proposes to remove the fault grounds for application for judicial separation.

Another motion will be introduced for the Central American Bank for Economic Integration – Expansion and Rehabilitation of the Philip Goldson Highway, borrowing $48 million to do the Mile 8.5 to Mile 24.5 section of the highway. The section from Mile 24.5 is currently being done.
