Man claims common-law-wife started fire that destroyed their house

Posted: Friday, June 3, 2022. 10:03 am CST.

By BBN Staff: A wooden house in the CET Site area of Belize City was destroyed by fire sometime after 10:00 on Thursday night.

According to police, Devon Geban, 42, one of the occupants of the home, reported to police that he was sleeping when he felt a burning sensation on his body and awoke to find burning toilet paper on his body. He reported that the other occupant of the house, Clarine Castillo, 50, his common law wife; was standing over him and behaving in a “boisterous manner”.

Geban reportedly told police he put out the toilet paper that was on fire while Castillo continued to behave boisterously. She then reportedly proceeded out of the bedroom to the kitchen where she gathered debris in a container and lit them on fire, causing the fire to get out of control.

Both occupants were referred to the Domestic Violence Unit of police ad fire personnel. The fire was extinguished but the home was completely destroyed.
