By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has asserted that he will attend the Summit of the Americas only if all nations are invited.
U.S. President Joe Biden is preparing to host the Summit in Los Angeles, however, it is still unclear if Lopez Obrador will attend since the U.S. has not invited the governments of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
Mexico is Latin America’s second most populated country and is a top trading partner for the U.S.
“If all countries are invited, I am going to attend the summit,” Lopez Obrador said.
This is the first time since 1994 that the summit will be held in the United States as the Biden administration seeks to reassert US leadership.
The U.S. is also attempting to mobilize regional efforts to tackle the increasing numbers of migrants and asylum seekers heading toward the U.S.
“Is it going to be the Summit of the Americas or is it going to be the friends of America summit?” Lopez Obrador said.
Meanwhile, Caribbean leaders had been considering whether or not they will boycott the summit if the US went ahead with its plan to not invite the leaders of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua to the event.
However, reports indicate that 13 of the 14 member nations of CARICOM have agreed to attend the Summit after encouragement by the Biden administration’s relief measures toward Cuba and Venezuela.
