Mother, whose child is in state custody, charged for assaulting social worker outside Family Court

By BBN Staff: Thirty-four-year-old Kanchi Meloney Casey was arraigned in Belize City Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a single charge of ‘common assault’ after allegedly attacking a social worker assigned to her case while Casey’s 3-year-old child is in state custody.

Casey appeared unrepresented in court before Magistrate Khiana Gordon where she pleaded “not guilty” to the charge. Casey reportedly attacked the social worker outside the Family Court on May 21.

In court, the single mother was very emotional and insisted she did nothing wrong. She was granted bail in the sum of $800 plus one surety of the same amount which she was able to meet. She was instructed to stay away from the complainant but informed the court that she must return to Family Court on July 13 and asked if she would need a new social worker assigned to her case.

The emotional mother said she would visit the Family Court every day until her child is returned to her. She is due back in court on August 2 for the common assault charge.
