By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A Nigerian ambassador accused the ex-ambassador to Jamaica Janet Olisah of visa racketeering and human trafficking against USA, Jamaica, Belize, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and 34 other Caribbean islands.

According to Nigerian newspaper The Whistler, Nigeria’s former Head of Mission to Namibia Ambassador Lilian Onoh on April 18, wrote a petition to the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama and Permanent Secretary Gabriel Aduda, alleging that senior Nigerian diplomat, Ambassador Janet Olisah, who was High Commissioner to Jamaica from 2017-2020, engaged in visa racketeering and human trafficking during that time.

The Whistler said a copy of Onoh’s petition was sent to the United States Embassy in Nigeria, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Inspector General of Police, the High Commission of Canada in Nigeria, and the High Commission of Jamaica in Nigeria.

The Whistler also said that on May 11, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted about a meeting between Aduda and a delegation from the United States Embassy led by Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard.

The newspaper also said its sources in the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the US, Canada, and other foreign embassies in Nigeria were concerned about the allegations, especially the use of note verbale (communication between diplomats of one country to another) for visa racketeering.

Onoh said that two junior staffers in the Nigerian Embassy in Jamaica had been fired to protect Olisa. She also reportedly told Onyeama that the Nigeria Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been hounding her and that he, Aduda, and Olisa had instructed the EFCC to arrest her but that she had already left the country.

There are quite a number of Nigerians in Belize many of whom have the goal of reaching the United States.
