By Aaron Humes: 18-year-old Shemar Gillett, of Iguana Street, Belize City, was remanded without bail on Thursday on charges of two counts of use of deadly means of harm upon Joanna Parham and Anthony Parham and one count of wounding upon Joanna Parham.
Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson explained to him that due to the nature of the offenses, she will not be taking a plea.
The Police prosecutor informed the court that while the charge of wounding could be tried summarily and on indictment, he will wait for directives first from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)’s office before taking a plea for that offense so no plea was taken at this time.
The Senior Magistrate also informed Gillett that under the Crime Control Criminal & Justice Act, her hands were tied as it relates to granting him bail, hence why he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until July 25, 2022.
According to police, on Monday, May 30, 2022, at 7:30 p.m., acting upon information received of shots fired at the corner of Gibnut and Currasow Street, CIB Precinct One visited the location where inside a police mobile they saw Joana Parham of Currasow Street suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the right upper leg and right lower foot. Parham was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) for medical treatment. Two vehicles were also seen with damage from bullet holes.
Police initial investigations revealed that at about 7:15 p.m. Anthony Parham was walking on Currassow Street from the direction of Raccoon Street into Cemetery Road, when upon reaching the corner of Gibnut Street and Curassow Street, he was ambushed from behind by someone who fired in his direction causing the injuries to Joana Parham, who was sitting on Currasow Street, about 50 feet in front of Anthony Parham.
