Tracy Taegar Panton says Minister Jose Abelardo Mai’s carrot comment in the Sitting of the House of Representatives on Friday is unparliamentary, disrespectful, sexist

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Tracy Taegar Panton says Minister Jose Abelardo Mai’s comment that she should ‘go sit on the carrots’, made in the Sitting of the House of Representatives on Friday, is unparliamentary, disrespectful, and sexist. Specifically Jose Mai said “when you go and sit down on the carrots and take a photograph then I will believe it,” as a reaction to a Facebook post made earlier in the week that carrots were rotting in the field due to lack of markets.

“The specific reference made that I should go sit on a carrot is completely unparliamentary and has no place in the House. Complete disrespect for ALL women in Belize” wrote Taegar Panton on social media.

Panton said she will continue to stand in defense of the people.

“While you think it is appropriate to bully Women in the Honorable House of Representative [sic] unchecked, I will continue to stand up for the people and things I believe in.,”

In her post, she also asked Mai if that’s the way he speaks to women, his mother, sister, and wife.

“You’re a disrespectful bloody fool,” she wrote.

Then she asked, “Where are Rosana and Dolores?”

Taegar Panton also asked if the House Speaker missed the sexual innuendo.

Recently Panton made a post on social media about farmers in San Carlos, Orange Walk, “being forced to throw away their rotting produce because they are not able to sell on the local market”.

Later she posted that the Agriculture Ministry’s Clifford Martinez had called and explained the carrots situation to which she said: “I am sincerely impressed by your proactive approach and for providing further insight into this matter. The planned interventions you shared will be well received, I believe, by this entire farming community.”

In response, Minister Mai had said that carrots were not rotting in the fields, but that overproduction was causing slow movement in the local market.

The situation came to a head-on Friday morning at the House much to the chagrin of Opposition Representative Panton.
