World Health Organization: Tobacco kills millions of people, destroys millions of hectares annually

Posted: Friday, June 3, 2022. 10:47 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: World No Tobacco Day was observed on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, under the theme “Tobacco, a threat to our environment.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) says that the Tobacco industry is causing damage to widespread deforestation, pollution, and emitting millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide.

This industry is notably one of the world’s biggest polluters, WHO said in a report.

The report, Tobacco: Poisoning Our Planet outlined new findings on the extent to which the tobacco industry is harming both the environment and human health.

According to the report, the tobacco industry is responsible for the annual loss of 8 million human lives, 600 million trees, 200,000 hectares of land, 22 billion tonnes of water, and releases about 84 million tonnes of CO2 into the Earth’s atmosphere.

WHO officials say that the findings are devastating.

In addition, tobacco products are the most littered items on the planet.

WHO urged world leaders to treat cigarette filters as single-use plastics, and to consider banning them along with the implementation of stronger tobacco taxes including an environmental tax.
