Albert Representative Tracy Taegar Panton says Minister Jose Mai crossed a dangerous line; carrot comment ‘demands a public apology’

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Albert Representative Tracy Taegar Panton says Minister Jose Mai crossed a dangerous line with his carrot comment at the House of Representatives on Friday. In a social media post, she said the matter ‘demands a public apology’. Specifically Jose Mai said “when you go and sit down on the carrots and take a photograph then I will believe it,” as a reaction to a Facebook post made earlier in the week that carrots were rotting in the field due to lack of markets.

“The Member from the House of Representatives from Orange Walk South, the Hon. Jose Abelardo Mai crossed a dangerous line yesterday,” Taegar Panton wrote.

“While he did call me personally to say that “what I thought I heard is not what he meant to say” and expressed his apologies for the “miscommunication”, a matter as egregious and blatantly disrespectful as this to ALL women and girls in Belize demands a public apology.”

Mai said yesterday his comment was taken out of context and said he had called Representative Taegar Panton to apologize. And while he said the Representative had accepted his apology, Taegar Panton says she cannot let it pass just like that.

“As women, we should never accept being disrespected and we should NOT accept any other kinds of abusive behavior even if it appears to be “subtle”. What you accept, if left unchecked, will lead to more harmful, detrimental, and even life-threatening manifestations,” said the Albert Representative.
