Potential Tropical Storm ‘Alex’ picks up speed; May cause flooding rains to Florida

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued tropical storm warnings for the southern half of the Florida Peninsula as heavy rains and gusty winds are forecast from potential tropical storm ‘Alex’.

The system is currently producing a broad area of rain and thunderstorms.

This morning, flash flooding was reported in Miami.

The system hasn’t yet developed but poses a threat of tropical-storm-force winds to land areas within 48 hours.

Tropical storm warnings and watches have also been hoisted in western Cuba and the northwestern Bahamas.

The NHC notes that the system may not develop into a tropical storm until it emerges into the Atlantic Ocean Saturday night or Sunday.
