By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being celebrated at The Belize Zoo as Sharon Matola Day in honor of Ѕhаrоn Маtоlа, thе fоundеr аnd vіѕіоnаrу bеhіnd “thе bеѕt lіttlе zоо іn thе wоrld.”
“She is not only the founder of The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center but wrote many books about the flora and fauna of Belize,” Prime Minister John Briceno noted as he commemorated the over 2,600 acres of land at the Belize Zoo now known as the Sharon Matola Wildlife Sanctuary.
Prime Minister Briceno said that Matola was an avid advocate for the protection and preservation of Belize’s natural resources.
At Friday’s sitting of the House of Representatives, Minister of Human Development, Families & Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Dolores Balderamos Garcia spoke of Matola’s heritage and contributions to Belize.
“Sharon’s legacy will always be loved in our country for all that she has done for wildlife conservation,” Balderamos- Garcia said.
Starting this year and every year after, the first Saturday in June will be recognized as Sharon Matola Day at the Belize Zoo.
In lieu of admission fees for Sharon Matola Day, visitors are encouraged to bring fresh fruit, veggies, and meat. This is to pay homage to Sharon’s strategy of garnering in-kind support to feed and care for the animals in the early days of the Belize Zoo.
