By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize is facing Guatemala today, Sunday at 1:00 at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium in Guatemala City in the Concacaf Nations League.

It’s a must-win match for both countries after falling in the first game on Thursday. Belize lost 0-2 to the Dominican Republic in Belmopan while Guatemala was beaten by the same score in Cayenne by French Guiana.

Going into the competition, the FFB considered Guatemala to be the toughest opponent but faltering against the Dominican Republic has made a victory the only possible score the team will be looking for today. Currently, Belize is in the Concacaf Nations League B. Finishing last in the group would drop us to League C, and the way things started out means the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) has to start adding points now.

Guatemala is in a similar bind and cannot afford to slip up today against our BMNT. The Guatemala team was coming off an undefeated streak and were considered favorites going into Thursday’s game.

Coach David Pérez’s lineup on Thursday had Charles Tillett in goal; Norman Anderson, Eugene Martinez, DeShawon Nembhard, and Everal Trapp in defense; Tony Rocha, Jovaunn Ramos, Horace Avila in the middle; and Angelo Capello, Deon McCaulay and Krisean Lopez up front. At least that’s the lineup the FFB presented to Concacaf because the team was not that offensive.

Pérez made five changes: Jesse August for Avila, Carlos Bernárdez for McCaulay, Darren Myvett for Ramos, Eldon Renaau for Anderson, and Luis Torres for Rocha due to injury.

Incidentally, if you heard foreign announcers calling Belizean players by the wrong names, that’s because someone made last-minute changes with the players’ numbers and that change wasn’t reflected in the official lineup which was circulated to the media.

After today’s match, the BMNT will return from Guatemala on Monday to prepare for the third game on Thursday, June 9 against French Guiana. The match is scheduled for 4:00 pm at the FFB Stadium.

The BMNT will then travel to French Guiana on Saturday, June 11, and will arrive on Monday, June 13, for the final match this year against French Guiana on Tuesday, June 14. The game will be played at the Dr. Edmard Lama Municipal Stadium in Cayenne.

The BMNT then leaves French Guiana on Wednesday, June 15, to arrive here on Friday, June 17.

The remaining two matches in the Concacaf Nations League are scheduled for March 2023. Belize will host Guatemala at 4:00 pm at the FFB Stadium on Friday, March 24, 2023, before traveling to take on the Dominican Republic on Monday, March 27 at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo.
