By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize lost its second game in the Concacaf Nations League today falling 2-0 to Guatemala at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium in Guatemala City.

Guatemala controlled the ebb and flow of the match getting two undeserved goals that gave them the victory. But truth be told, Belize didn’t do much to deserve a better score either.

Miscommunication in the defensive line in the 9’ gave Guatemala the go-ahead goal. Goalkeeper Charles Tillett came out for the ball, but Deshawon Nembhard got to the ball first. When he attempted to clear, the ball bounced off his chest and found its way into the goal.

Belize collected two yellow cards in the early minutes from Darrel Myvett and Krisean Lopez.

Guatemala pushed forward but could only get three shots at goal in the first half while Belize only got one. The second half was more of the same with both teams playing their hearts out but not coming with much.

Goalkeeper Charles Tillett had a relatively good game stopping everything that came his way until the 74´ when the Mexican referee Diego Montaño awarded Guatemala a penalty kick after Horace Avila tackled Santis in the box. Carlos Mejía converted from the penalty spot in the 75’ with a low shot to the left Tillett went the other way.

On a bad note, Jose Urbina came off the field on a stretcher in the 24th minute suffering from a hamstring injury.

Belize made five changes in the ball game. The first came when Norman Anderson had to sub for Urbina in the 27’. In the 57’, Avila and Warren Moss entered for Deon McCaulay and Nana Mensah.

In the 68’, Jesse August subbed for Capello, and looking for more offense, Donell Arzu replaced Capello Anderson. It didn’t work. Our best chance came when Krisean Lopez hit a floater late in the game, but the ball slid off the crossbar.

In the 35th, Lopez came up with a good shot, but Guatemalan keeper Ricardo Jerez saved it.

Lopez had also provided Belize with a good break in the 41st minute, but Deon McCaulay missed what was a superb opportunity. A ground-level pass from Lopez on the right, Myvett extended it for McCaulay, but his shot was weak and wide.

To top it off, the game finished under heavy rain.

After two games, Belize is down and out with no points to show for their efforts.

Guatemala picked up their first three points. Later today, French Guiana plays the Dominican Republic.

Belize’s next game comes up on Thursday against French Guiana at 4:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.

Belize’s lineup: Charles Tillett; Jose Urbina, Eugene Martinez, DeShawon Nembhard, and Everal Trapp; Darrell Myvett, Nana Mensah, Angelo Capello, and Krisean Lopez; and Deon McCaulay and Carlos Bernárdez.

Guatemala’s lineup: Ricardo Jerez; Jose Pinto, Jose Morales, Oscar Castellanos, Gerardo Gordillo, Stheven Robles; Carlos Mejía, Rodrigo Saravia, Alejandro Galindo; Andrés Lezcano, Rubio Méndez
