By Aaron Humes: 40-year-old Honduran national, Maria Cristina Perez Ayala, a Seamstress of Giles Street, Belize City who is originally from Negrito, Honduras, will be deported from Belize despite having set roots here.

Ayala appeared before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford where the charge of entering Belize other than an approved place of entry was read to her and she pleaded guilty. For the offence, Ayala was fined $1,000 to be paid forthwith, which she did.

However, she was taken to the Central Prison to await deportation.

Ayala has been living in Belize since 2017, has a daughter, and is married to a Belizean.

But she did not enter Belize legally, as she admitted, and more recently went back home to Honduras to visit her sick mother then re-entered Belize illegally since the borders were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, Ayala was found not to have registered with the Refugees Department of the Ministry of Immigration as either a refugee or seeker of asylum.
