By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tropical Storm Alex is the first named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) had been closely monitoring the disturbance as it threw heavy rains and gusty winds over Florida causing floods.
As of this morning, it strengthened into Tropical Storm Alex.
According to the NHC, Alex had sustained winds of 60 mph and was located about 270 miles northeast of Fort Pierce, Florida.
On the forecast track, the tropical storm is expected to pass near or just north of Bermuda on Monday.
Forecasters say that slight strengthening is possible today followed by weakening on Monday.
Heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Alex is expected to take 2 to 3 inches of rain across Bermuda through Monday.
