Teenager charged with aggravated assault with a firearm

By Aaron Humes: Allan Pitts Crescent, Belize City resident Keon Straughan, 18, appeared in court on Friday charged with aggravated assault on a fellow teenager, allegedly shooting at him from a motorcycle on Nurse Findley Crescent in Port Loyola.

Straughan pleaded not guilty before Senior Magistrate, Tricia Pitts-Anderson. Due to the nature of the offense, bail was denied and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until July 2022.

According to police, on Wednesday at about 6:44 p.m., information was received from the Police Control Room of shots fired. At a residence on Nurse Findley Crescent, they found several nine-millimeter-expended shell casings in the middle of the street, an apparent bullet hole on a yard gate, and what appeared to be bullet damage to the front door and more slugs inside.

Police’s initial investigation revealed that a 16-year-old minor who lives on T Street was walking on Nurse Findley Crescent when upon reaching in front of a residence on Nurse Findley Crescent he was alerted by the revving sound of a motorcycle behind him. When he turned around, he saw a man he knows as Straughan riding a red motorcycle and dressed in full blue clothing who stopped right in front of him then pulled out a firearm from out of the basket on the motorcycle and fired shots at his direction.

The minor said he took cover from the shots by running into an empty lot and escaped unhurt.
