Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association grants training scholarships to nine Belizean athletes for the 2023 Pan Am Games, 2024 Paris Olympics

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOGCA), also known as the National Olympic Committee, on Monday granted training scholarships to nine Belizean athletes to prepare for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, and for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

BOGCA held a contract signing ceremony on Monday afternoon at its new offices at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City.

According to BOGCA president Hilberto Martinez, the Olympic Solidarity scholarship is for a 26-month span and runs from May 2022 to August 2024. The scholarships are financed by the International Olympic Committee in Geneva, Switzerland.

The athletes are from:

Athletics: Shaun Gill (100m), Glenford Williams (110m hurdles, 100m), Hilary Gladden (100m), Ashantie Carr (triple jump, long jump), and Ashontie Carr (400m, 800m)

Cycling: Gabrielle Gabourel and Derrick Chavarria

Judo: Ishmael Castro (Under 90kg)

Sailing: Trent Hardwick (Single hand dinghy)

Seven athletes were present, except, Hardwick who is away at a university in St. Louis, Missouri in the United States, and Gabourel who was taking CXC exams.

Gill, who already competed in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, and Gladden, who participated in the 2021 Lima Pan American Games, are to receive a US$1,250 monthly stipend, which according to BOGCA, is to assist them with living expenses, while they train for the international events.
