CARICOM Chair says several regional leaders will attend Summit of the Americas

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are today leaving to attend the 9^th Summit of the Americas hosted by the United States in Los Angeles, California.

Several regional leaders had called for a boycott citing that leaders of all nations in the region should have been included and invited to the event.

This is after the Biden administration decided not to include the Governments of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.

CARICOM Chair and Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceno said that Belize will attend along with leaders from Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, who had publicly announced their attendance.

The Summit of the Americas is being held under the theme “ Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future” for the hemisphere.

The U.S. noted that it would work with the region’s stakeholders on improving pandemic response and resilience, promoting green and equitable recovery, and building strong and inclusive democracies.

According to Caribbean Loop, Briceno said that among the issues of importance is the need to discuss the level of debt that developing countries are incurring because of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St Vincent and the Grenadines is the only CARICOM leader that has publicly announced that he will not attend citing that the U.S. has no right to exclude anyone from the Summit.
